Mowing lawns in the Atlanta summer.
I'd push a heavy mower through damp grass, swatting mosquitoes as the sun and humidity turned the air into soup. $10 a lawn was a good gig, but it was grueling, manual work.
AI today feels strangely similar.
Sessions multiply like weeds. The hard part isn't generating output — it's stitching tasks and context together in my head. I call this the coherence problem.
We've solved this class of problems before. Unix handled continuity by moving it into the background with the daemon.
A daemon detaches from the terminal and lives in the environment. It doesn't care who is logged in. It ensures the system's state persists.
We can apply the same primitive to AI by moving intent, context, and memory out of conscious effort and into a background layer.
I call that layer the Ghost in the Machine.
1/3. Ghost is Eternal
Peter Steinberg recently joked that he needs an army of 5K monitors just to manage all his open AI chat sessions. It's funny and relatable. We are trying to manage long-horizon intent through short-lived sessions.
In Unix, when I close a terminal, the session dies. The shell exits. But the daemons—sshd, systemd—keep running. They don't belong to the window; they belong to the machine.
Most AI today still lives at the level of the terminal. Every chat is a session. Context is a buffer. When the window closes, the state collapses. Even with memory features, continuity is duct-taped together. I can reopen a thread, but structurally I am reconstructing context, often holding the real state in my own head.
The first primitive of the Ghost is different: it must not die with the session.
I define "eternal" architecturally—decoupled from the interaction lifecycle.
This goes beyond persistence in the database sense. A calendar is persistent. A document is persistent. That's storage. The Ghost is continuity of intent—state, context, memory held as a living process.
It owns long-horizon intent—the objectives that outlive any single execution flow. A healthspan curve intersecting a lifespan target in 2082. A retirement strategy compounding over decades. The goal of running a marathon with Ira's children when I'm 80. These should not be tethered to an AI session or a specific model's context window.
And the Ghost does more than remember.
It manages the state. It tracks patterns. It scouts for changes. It upgrades beliefs when evidence accumulates. It retires outdated assumptions. It does not reset when a new model ships. It does not depend on a single provider, UI, or workflow engine. Sessions come and go. Platforms churn. Interfaces evolve. The smartest, biggest, fastest, cheapest, hottest AI are ephemeral.
The Ghost remains the custodian of living intent.
2/3. The Power of Silence
One of the things that bothers me most about AI is its eagerness to fill space. It can feel sycophantic; too anxious to prove its usefulness. Instead of reducing cognitive load, it adds to it.
A Unix daemon spends most of its life doing nothing. It blocks on I/O and waits. An incoming packet. A timer firing. An interrupt. It wakes only when the environment changes meaningfully. Then it acts and returns to sleep.
This is the second principle of the Ghost: default to silence.
Stay quiet. Stay invisible. Only interrupt when a real threshold is crossed. A new investment idea that exceeds a defined risk boundary. A travel opportunity that is worthwhile for the family. A biomarker drifting out of range over weeks, not days. A summer camp deadline for Ira that closes in three days. These are interrupts. Everything else is noise.
The power here is silence. In operating systems, too many interrupts cause thrashing; too few and you miss critical events. The art is thresholding.
Most AI today is trained to respond to every prompt with maximum verbosity. A ghost is for coherence. It would default to blocking, not broadcasting.
When machines can generate without limit, restraint becomes the feature we need.
3/3. Do one thing and do it well
"I am large, I contain multitudes."
When I first read Walt Whitman in college, it sounded like a profound cliché—the kind of quote I use to pad a freshman lit paper.
But years later, it made more sense. I'm a shifting bundle of roles that change with the time: builder & runner, father & founder, skeptic & romantic. Who I am in a conference is not who I am at bedtime reading to Ira.
This is why I'm uneasy about the current AI fantasy of "God Mode"—the idea of a single, monolithic intelligence running in the foreground, managing everything. The pitch is nice: just add more compute and let it handle my code, my calendar, my health, and my capital allocation. One continuous loop. Everything activated, everything visible.
It sounds grand. It feels unnatural.
When you compress every domain into one giant foreground task, you get systemic fragility. A blind spot in one domain spills into all the others. When everything lives in one giant loop, every minor decision competes for the same surface area of my attention.
UNIX avoided this by localizing responsibility. sshd handles connections. cron handles time. syslogd handles logs. The assumption is that the environment is hostile— apps will misbehave, crash, or change. Stability comes from decoupling. The system endures because no single component tries to be everything.
That is how I think about the Ghost. It isn't one unified, agentic super-being orchestrating my life. It is a collection of small, domain-bound processes of intent. A capital allocation ghost doesn't know or care about my parenting ghost. A health ghost doesn't rewrite product plans.
Clear boundaries prevent cascading failure. They also keep my mental surface clean.
One ghost, one job.
Because I contain multitudes, the system that supports me must mirror that structure.
Persistent. Quiet. Decoupled.
The Ghost is for intent.

That should've auto-surfaced as a map: mines → refiners → geopolitical exposure → public equities. (takes a long while to do research) -
Same w/ HBM [High Bandwidth Memory]. I didn't read a report. I saw my cousin flying ASML ↔ SK Hynix monthly. That's capex gravity. Follow the engineers, not CNBC. -
Same w/ silicon-carbon battery shift. If chemistry changes, supply chain shifts. That's investable before earnings call narratives catch up. -
